Gesso is a white base used to prep surfaces prior to painting. Gesso is used to preserve the painting surface and enhance paint adhesion. Gesso on furniture creates more elegance and accentuates carved designs.
What Does Gesso Mean?
Gesso is a white base that can be used as a primer for painting any kind of surface, including wood, canvas, and sculpture. Gesso is a mixture of a binder and chalk, color, or gypsum. Gesso adds roughness to the painting surface and allows the paint to adhere to it. Acrylic basecoat is the most frequently used type of gesso today.
Gesso Applications?
These are 5 different ways to use gesso.
1. Primering. A gesso primer smoothes the surface of your artwork. Gesso allows the color pigments to adhere to the painting surface. Wet paint does not soak through the fibers of absorbent materials when the gesso is utilized. Gesso improves the color brightness of paint while also protecting the surface. A gesso primer makes solid objects more durable.
2. Layering. Gesso is great for highlighting the focal point or subject of a multi-layered artwork.
3. Dry-brushing. Gesso provides the perfect texture for dry-brush artwork. Dry-brushing with gesso provides defined lines and adds dimension to painted surfaces.
4. Chalk painting. A Gesso chalk finish adds a vintage touch. White gesso can also be used to tone down overly bright colors and excessively shiny surfaces.
5. Whitewashing. Gesso on textured surfaces, such as embossed designs, 3D shapes, and wrinkled paper, makes details stand out more against a base color.
